What Is My Tutoring Business Worth?
Tutoring and education businesses have become increasingly attractive acquisition targets. The demand for supplemental education keeps growing, and many of these businesses generate strong recurring revenue. Whether you run a Kumon franchise, a Mathnasium location, or an independent tutoring center, here's how to think about what it's worth.
Typical Valuation Ranges
Most tutoring businesses sell for 2x to 3.5x SDE.
Factors that push toward the higher end:
- Franchise model with strong brand recognition
- High student retention rates (70%+ annual)
- Recurring monthly tuition model (not pay-per-session)
- Multiple subjects or grade levels served
- Revenue above $500K with consistent growth
- Employed tutors (not independent contractors)
- Strong online reviews and local reputation
Factors that push toward the lower end:
- Owner is the primary tutor doing most of the teaching
- Pay-per-session model with no recurring revenue
- Dependent on a single school district or referral source
- Small student base (under 50 active students)
- Short remaining lease or poor location
- High tutor turnover
Franchise vs. Independent
Franchise Tutoring Centers
Kumon, Mathnasium, Sylvan, Huntington — franchise locations come with brand recognition, proven curriculum, and operational systems. They typically command moderate to strong multiples because the business model is documented and transferable. The tradeoff is franchise fees (typically 8–10% of revenue) and operational restrictions.
Independent Tutoring Businesses
Independent centers can command higher margins since there are no franchise fees, but they need to demonstrate that the curriculum, systems, and brand aren't dependent on the owner. An independent center with documented programs and employed tutors can match or exceed franchise multiples. One that relies on the owner's personal reputation will sell for less.
Key Metrics Buyers Evaluate
Student Retention Rate
This is the single most important metric. A tutoring business with 80%+ annual retention demonstrates that the program works and families stay enrolled. Low retention means the business is constantly replacing students — expensive and unsustainable.
Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)
Businesses that charge monthly tuition (regardless of sessions attended) are significantly more valuable than pay-per-session models. Monthly billing creates predictable cash flow and higher lifetime student value.
Revenue Per Student
Strong tutoring centers generate $200–$400+ per student per month. Higher revenue per student indicates effective pricing and program depth (multiple subjects, test prep add-ons, etc.).
Student Acquisition Cost
How much does it cost to enroll a new student? Centers that rely on word-of-mouth and organic search have lower acquisition costs than those dependent on paid advertising. Buyers pay attention to this.
Tutor Quality and Retention
If tutors are W-2 employees with training and longevity, the business is more transferable. If they're independent contractors who could leave at any time, that's a risk factor.

How to Increase Your Tutoring Business's Value
- Move to recurring revenue. If you're still doing pay-per-session, transition to monthly enrollment packages. This single change can significantly impact your multiple.
- Reduce owner dependence. Stop tutoring students yourself. Your job is to manage the business, not deliver the service.
- Build systems. Document your curriculum, hiring process, training program, and marketing playbook. A buyer needs to see that the business runs on systems, not on you.
- Diversify your offering. Add test prep (SAT, ACT), homework help, or enrichment programs. Multiple revenue streams reduce risk.
- Secure your lease. Education centers need foot traffic and visibility. A strong lease with 5+ years remaining is a significant asset.
- Track and showcase your results. Student improvement data (grade increases, test score improvements) is powerful marketing and demonstrates program effectiveness to buyers.
